Gospel Jn 6:16-21
When it was evening, the disciples of Jesus went down to the sea,
embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum.
It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.
When they had rowed about three or four miles,
they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat,
and they began to be afraid.
But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
They wanted to take him into the boat,
but the boat immediately arrived at the shore
to which they were heading.
Reflections
During the storm in the sea, the disciples felt they did not have Jesus with them, unlike in the previous account where he was sleeping, and he calmed the sea when there was a storm. Jesus knew the situation and came to them though they did not recognise him. Jesus says, "It is I. Do not be afraid.” This ‘I’ is equal to ‘I am’ used in the old testament for God himself. God himself is here, and He is in control of everything. Therefore, there is no need to be afraid. Without Jesus, life is merely a storm, a tempest uncontrollable. Therefore we need to set aside quality time for Jesus in prayer and scripture reading and recognise him when He says 'It is I. Do not be afraid.” in all our challenges, struggles and pains.
