Memorial of St John de Britto, 4 February, 2023, Saturday of the Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel  Mk 6:30-34

The Apostles gathered together with Jesus

and reported all they had done and taught.

He said to them,

"Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while."

People were coming and going in great numbers,

and they had no opportunity even to eat.

So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.

People saw them leaving and many came to know about it.

They hastened there on foot from all the towns

and arrived at the place before them.

When Jesus disembarked and saw the vast crowd,

his heart was moved with pity for them,

for they were like sheep without a shepherd;

and he began to teach them many things.

Reflections:

The humble wish of the Greeks is to see Jesus. This is our wish also. That is why we give this time to contemplate. “Lord, may we see you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more  closely,” as the ancient prayer puts it. When we share in the Eucharist, we need to become aware that it is our own life, blessed, broken, shared out and consumed for the life of the world.” ‘Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.’ The grain of wheat will die and will nourish us with food. In the death of relationships, of health, of faith and all that may be dear to us, there is always the invitation to deeper life and a call to everlasting life.

Activity:

Imagine yourself in the place of the disciples of Jesus.  Sit with Jesus and just listen to him. He has something to tell you today
