Gospel : Mt 9:14-15

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,

"Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,

but your disciples do not fast?"

Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests mourn

as long as the bridegroom is with them?

The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,

and then they will fast."

Reflection:

The disciples of John were good men but they were genuinely puzzled by the way of life of the disciples of Jesus. They simply wanted to know why the disciples of Jesus did not fast. Jesus compares His disciples to wedding guests who rejoice while he, the bridegroom, is still with them. Like the disciples of John, do I miss out on the joy of living? The bridegroom is here! Because of his arrival, we are living in the era of the ‘new creation’, the era in which despite appearances, the Lord ‘takes away the sin of the world’ and is gathering everyone safely home. Even in His suffering and death, Jesus is with us, and we do not mourn. Without His presence in our lives, we would truly mourn the loss of someone really relevant and essential to our lives.
