1 March, 2023 | Wednesday of the First Week in Lent
Gospel Lk 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
"This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here."
Reflection:
Jesus says to us that no sign would be given to the people except the sign of Jonah. Jonah preached to the Ninevites and they were converted. We have the tendency to ask for a sign. The greatest sign of the Lord’s presence is the Eucharist. He is present in His Word, in the Eucharist, in each other and deep within us. We don’t need any other signs and wonders. Lent is a good time to become more aware of the many ways the Lord is present in all his greatness and wonder. He is bigger than the signs that we ask for from God. If we truly believe that we have Him in our hearts we need not ask for signs any more.
Activity :
Let us ask ourselves, do we allow Jesus to have a special place in our hearts and do we believe His presence in the Holy Eucharist?
