 Gospel : Mt 17: 9a, 10-

As they were coming down from the mountain,
the disciples asked Jesus,
“Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
He said in reply, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;
but I tell you that Elijah has already come,
and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased.
So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”
Then the disciples understood
that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

Reflections:

The event of   today's   Gospel takes place immediately after the transfiguration of Jesus on the Mount Tabor.  Elijah together with Moses was present at the scene. The Jews thought that Elijah would come as the forerunner of the Messiah. But Jesus reveals to them that this prophecy has already been fulfilled in the person and the preaching of John the Baptist. He is the last prophet, armed with the Spirit and power of Elijah. Like Elijah, John too preached repentence and reformation. Do I  listen to the prophetic call to repent and change my life inorder to welcome the saviour in to my life?.
