Gospel Lk 17: 7-10
Jesus said to the Apostles:
“Who among you would say to your servant
who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field,
‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’?
Would he not rather say to him,
‘Prepare something for me to eat.
Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink.
You may eat and drink when I am finished’?
Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded?
So should it be with you.
When you have done all you have been commanded, say,
‘We are unprofitable servants;
we have done what we were obliged to do.’”
Reflection:
Very often those who have servants, treat them miserably. Only the rich can afford a servant, to do the jobs for which they do not want to waste their time with. No jobs are menial and have their dignity, but the culture of a place stereotype certain jobs as menial. Servants are often not given the desired respect of a decent way of speech. In some cases, they are even abused. This makes us want to think of how we who have been created into this beautiful world, need to be grateful to God, our Creator, our Master. Jesus makes us realise that we need to be constantly grateful for being given a decent co-existence in a wonderful world. All that we receive is by grace and we ought to be thankful for it. Our life is in the hands of God, and so every act we do, must be pleasing to him. Let us conscientiously live our lives, so that all we do may be like a gratitude-gift back to God for all we have received.
Activity:
Say a good word to one your domestic helpers today, ask about their personal welfare - health, family etc.
